Charlie Byrd"s Place I Welcome You

Charlie Byrd I was born in Mobile, Alabama, a great city on the gulf of Mexico, in the Southeastern part of the United States. It was a wonderful place to grow up, with water all around, long hot summers and so much for a young person to do. I loved sports and participated in almost all of them.

I think I came into this world singing. My mom said I had colic when I was a baby, so I doubt she found the sound very appealing. But, who knows, maybe that developed my lungs and voice. Just kidding. I had a wonderful grandmother who loved most kinds of music and she exposed me to it from the time she first held me in her arms. Grandma lived with us so between her and my Mom, either the radio was on or they were singing or humming a song. Grandma took me and a cousin to see our first live show. It was Ernest Tubb. I can see him now on the stage singing. I was thinking "I need to do that". Grandma also loved Elvis Presley and went to his concerts when he was in Mobile.

I remember singing my first solo in the first grade in school, and have been singing ever since. I started singing in Sunday school when Mom had us kids in church before we knew what a church was for. I got my exposure to gospel music there and also from an African American church several houses from where I lived. I would sit on my back porch and listen to some of the most wonderful singing I had heard in my life. It seemed their choir was always rehearsing, and boy, was it good. I will never forget the sound. I was also always asked by my friends and family to sing for them.

While watching an old John Wayne movie, I decided I wanted to be a United States Marine. So I did just that. I joined the Marines and served my basic training boot camp at Paris Island, South Carolina. Wow, was that tough. It is one of the things in my life that I'm most proud of doing. While serving, I performed all over the Southeastern United States, California and Washington, D.C. I performed all over the Far East doing USO shows for our troops. What a wonderful audience they were. I performed in Tokyo, Japan for a year. I've had bands all over, and of course, here in the great Northwest where I now reside. I make my home in the wonderful city of Portland, Oregon.

The internet has opened a whole new world for entertainers to perform. If you have a computer and want to experience some great time and music, come on in. SWEETSOUTHERNSOUNDS is one of the sites I hang out in, along with some other great entertainers. No telling who you might see in one of the singng rooms. The great Hal Willis, Freddie Hart, and many, many more. Come on in. You will be welcomed. Oh, by the way, I love college football and golf. I hold season tickets for the University of Alabama football games and I play golf whenever I can. I love it.
